The Sane Parish

A Pastor’s Guide to

Parishioner Mental Health Issues

What do pastors really need to know about mental illness?  Given the prevalence of mental health issues in our society today, what kinds of mental health issues
are likely to crop up, and likely to cause problems in the parish?  How can one learn to recognize and respond pastorally to clinical depression, anxiety disorders, addictions, personality disorders, and other mental health problems?  What resources are available for clergy in dealing with hurting church members?

These and other questions are addressed in this eight-week continuing education workshop for parish clergy and others in ministry.

Participants meet for an hour and a half for eight sessions.  Topics covered include recognizing and responding pastorally to some of the more common mental health problems clergy face in the parish, such as:

  1. Anxiety and Trauma Disorders

  2. Depression and Mood Disorders

  3. Addictions and Substance Abuse

  4. Complicated Grief

  5. Sexual Addictions

  6. Psychoses

  7. Personality Disorders

  8. Families in Distress

We also examine ethical issues, explore resources for help in the community, and look at how and when to make an effective referral.  Participants have an opportunity to share their experiences and learn from one another.

This workshop is held on a periodic basis.  For more information or schedule, contact Dr. Jonathan Golden.
