Credentials: Dr. Arey is a Certified Fee-based Practicing Pastoral Counselor. He holds credentials as a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and is a Diplomate in the American Psychotherapeutic Association. He is an ordained elder in the Western North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Specialties: Working with individuals, marriages, families, as well as providing consultation to ministers and congregations and businesses, Dr. Arey specializes in treatment of depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, sexual abuse trauma and victims, substance abuse issues, divorce, mediation, and divorce recovery. In addition he has received special training in the area of church conflict resolution and building healthy congregations.
Education: Dr. Arey received his Doctor of Ministry at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He holds a Masters of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School, and completed his undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. He received his clinical training at the School of Pastoral Care at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Dr. Arey has been with MCCS since 2002.

First United Methodist Church in Gastonia is located in downtown Gastonia and can be reached from I-85 via either exit 19 from the north or exit 17 from the south. From exit 19 turn back across the interstate and proceed toward Gastonia for approximately one mile turning left at the second stop light onto Union St. Take the first right turn which is Main Street and just past the first stoplight the First UMC will be on your left. Enter from the rear of the church. The receptionist can direct you downstairs to the Counseling Center.
