Carolina Institute for

Clinical Pastoral Training

The Carolina Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training (CICPT) provides accredited training in Clinical Pastoral Therapy leading toward professional certification by the state of North Carolina and the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.  Sponsored by Methodist Counseling and Consultation Services and the Presbyterian Samaritan Counseling Center in Charlotte, this training program has operated continuously for over thirty years.

Clinical Pastoral Therapy Overview

Clinical pastoral therapy is a specialized ministry combining perspectives from the behavioral sciences and and practical theology for study of the human dilemma, and to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the human soul. CICPT provides intensive introductory and advanced training leading toward professional certification for qualified men and women who are committed to the ministry of pastoral counseling.  Training sessions occupy approximately one day per week for a period of two years, commencing in September.

CICPT meets requirements as an Accredited Training Program of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.  Work completed in this program is recognized for professional certification by both AAPC and by the North Carolina Board of Fee-Based Practicing Pastoral Counselors.

In addition, CICPT is accredited as adjunct training site for the Doctor of Ministry program at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.  Course credit is awarded toward the D.Min. degree at Garrett-Evangelical for persons admitted to the D.Min. program.  Clinical Pastoral Therapy training and D.Min. studies may run concurrently.

Professional competence in pastoral counseling and psychotherapy develops progressively through stages of preparation and maturation.  Accordingly, Clinical Pastoral Therapy Training is offered at foundational, advanced, and supervisory levels.
